The "Ferguson Root Rake" story....
Around 5 years ago my family purchased some acreage that had grown up thick with brush, small trees and thickets. My uncle helped us with the cleanup using his brush cutter and excavator, which worked great and left behind a lot of debris.
I started out using a 3pt landscape rake, but it would get full quickly and also hop over any large sticks or limbs....so I was constantly having to turn around in the tractor seat to see what I missed and then back up and try to rake it again. I then attempted to use the grapple on the front of my tractor in which I had to keep it angled in a semi-upright position in order for the teeth to be positioned where they would barely scrape the ground, which every time I got a decent-sized pile or hit a tuff spot, the grapple would want to roll instead of staying in the semi-upright angel and also the top hydraulic arms would get in the way. I then started thinking I needed something that had teeth on it where I could just barely scrape below the surface, leave behind the dirt and also be in an upright position similar to a dozer blade so that I could maximize my pushing power...and so the first Root Rake was born. I used it on our property and was pleased with how it worked.
After using it for a while, I thought I would 'try' and sell it. Well, it sold and so I built another to see if it would sell, and fast forward to today... I am still building them and they are still selling, for which I am grateful to the good Lord that he allows me to do so. There have been many process improvements and measurement changes over time. The construction process has progressed from cutting metal with a side grinder and cutoff disc, to freehand using a plasma torch, to using custom jigs with the handheld plasma torch and custom breaks to build tines with teeth on the end. Fast foward to today, we now use a CNC Plasma machine with custom programs to cut our parts, which allows us to make much stronger, better looking and more consistent dimensions for our Root Rakes.
